Korean Mobile TV Broadcasters Agree On Free Services

The six winners of licences for “land-based mobile television services” in Korea have agreed to provide free broadcast services to all receivers in areas currently covered by television airwaves and other on-air broadcast facilities and to seek ways to reduce investment risks for mobile operators on equipment and transmission infrastructure. However, in areas not covered by the signal (eg, tunnels and so on) the mobile operators can restrict access to the signal, for example to their own customers.

“Industry watchers expect land-based mobile television services to have a larger audience than its rival standard, with its free services and advantage in content…However, finding a revenue model from land-based mobile television services for mobile operators is proving to be a challenge.”
