ML Media Conference: Universal Music Group: Digital & Mobile

Doug Morris, CEO of Universal Music Group (and chaiman of board at parent Vivendi Universal) and Zach Horowitz, COO, gave a presentation at the Merrill Lynch Media & Entertainment conference, but no archived webcast available. — Total digital revenues for first half 2005 were $101 million, compared to $32 million in the year-ago half.

— Online downloads were 55 percent of that, online subscriptions was 5 percent and mobile was 40 percent.

— The PDF mentions that 50 Cent’s latest album sold more than $1 million worth of ringtones.

— Revenue from these businesses grew from essentially nothing in the first half of 2003 to over Euro 100 million for the first half of 2005.

— US digital music market share is 36.1% YTD.

— UMG has sold over 25 million Mastertones in the US YTD.

— Earned over Euro 27 million from mobile products outside of the US in first half of 2005.

— Revenue from online subscriptions has grown at an 8% average monthly growth rate the past 12 months.

— UMG is working to establish a licensing structure for podcasting
