Orange offering free TV on mobile

[by Mike Butcher @ MIPCOM] Speaking on the mobile “superpanel” at MIPCOM Superpanel on the state of mobile TV distribution and funding, Julian Billot, of Orange France, said “It’s very hard for third parties to operate on the mobile space because it’s too complex to master what is happening. Orange’s model is to charge for data, not for content. To attract people to mobile, Orang is offering TV on the mobile for free on the weekends.” But the deal with content providers is separate from the content and separate from what they pay to the TV channel (e.g. Canal+) for the traffic.
Orange France is working directly with TV channels like Canal+, not aggregators. “Footbal rights in France is key for our value chain.”
In France mobile TV (which launched recently) is attracting viewership to the tune of 35 minutes a month. That’s the average. Compare that to normal TV viewership and it’s tiny, but it will grow.
