Virgin Digital Leaves Beta, Prices “Red Pass” Below Yahoo’s Price Hike

It seems like Virgin Digital, now out of beta, had a longer gestation that an elephant. When I first interviewed CEO Zach Zalon about it this time last year they were on Build #41 and he said they wouldn’t launch until they were sure the media player worked across platforms and devices. It still won’t work with iTunes, though. Subscriptions for “Red Pass” run $7.99 a month, higher than Yahoo’s intro rate of $4.99 with an annual subscripion but well under the post-increase price of $9.99. One nice touch that sets it apart: “”Free Music Insurance” — re-downloads of purchased songs in the event of a lost device or system failure.
