“There Are Many Issues To Be Sorted Out In Mobile Content Industry:” Vishal Gondal

Vishal Gondal, Founder of Indiagames, is also the head of the recently formed mobile value added services taskforce of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). I spoke to him briefly about this new initiative:
Tell us about the VAS taskforce?
Mobile entertainment business in India from an organisational perspective is in a mess. There is no single platform where all stakeholders – content owners and providers, operators, media companies and policy makers – can sit together and discuss issues and help grow the industry. CII’s VAS taskforce intends to fills this gap.
You already have an association under FICCI called Indian Games Industry and Trade Association (iGITA)?
iGITA is an association of content business owners and it does not represent all the stakeholders in the industry – like operators or policy makers.
So what are you going to do?
We are preparing a white paper on the mobile content business. There are several issues – like digital rights management, copyright, piracy and so on. The recent cricket SMS rights issue is one, for example. Then there are CDs of ringtones and wallpapers being sold in grey markets. There are handsets available with preloaded ringtones and wallpapers. There are illegal WAP sites being hosted. For every ringtone sold legally, there are five being sold in the grey market. We are going to have some initiatives on this.
