So this was a shocker yesterday – In UK, Peter Bale has left Times Online, though at his leaving drinks do last night he wouldn’t call it “resigning”. Bale left Reuters to join Times Online as editorial director in June 2004 and, under his tenure, the site’s audience grew from 1.5 million to 9 million monthly uniques in September. At least from the outside of News International’s compound, Bale has been an excellent motivator of staff and a high profile member of the online news industry. But he’d been uncharacteristically quiet since July when News International appointed Times managing editor Anne Spackman as editor-in-chief of the website. No clues yet about where he’ll go next. In the meantime Times Online relaunches soon.
Update: More news from Wapping: I missed this last week but David Roddick, head of strategic sales for News Group Digital, is also leaving. He’s been with the company for 17 years but, again, his departure follows several key digital appointments including Jim Mullen as digital strategy director and Mark Chippendale, who leads advertising on all Sun multimedia services. Roddick is leaving without a job to go.
