Dean Singleton May Join Tribune Fray

Dean Singleton’s MediaNews Group may snap up some of Tribune’s newspapers, according to Newsday. Citing a person close to the company, Newsday makes the valid point that Singleton may be interested in papers near his existing properties in places such as Allentown, Pa., and southern Connecticut. MediaNews, however, already has its hands full with digesting its recent acquisitions including the San Jose Mercury News. The California paper said recently that it plans to lay off 8.5 percent of its workforce by December 19, its second staff reduction in less than a year. (Via Romenesko)
Singleton, whose company owns 54 newspapers in 12 states, may not have difficulty convincing Tribune to sell him some smaller properties that may not interest the private equity buyers that are considering whether to buy the company.
Tribune: former Chief Executive John Madigan has taken a leave from Madison Dearborn Partners, a Chicago-based private equity firm that is reportedly joining the bidding for the media company.
