Amazon Acquires Audiobook Indie Brilliance Audio

Amazon continues to expand its on-demand publishing strategy, this time acquiring Brilliance Audio for an as-yet-undisclosed sum. Brilliance, founded in 1984 and touted as the largest independent U.S. publisher of audiobooks, will continue to operate independently within the e-commerce giant; founder and president Michael Snodgrass is still in charge and the operations will remain in Michigan. So why buy? Amazon hopes to use Brilliance, which currently publishes 12-15 new titles a month, to expand the number of books available in audio — and to enhance the sales possibilities for its CustomFlix subsidiary, which announced at the same time that it would support both standard CD and MP3-CD audiobook formats via its Disc on Demand service. Release.
