Voice SMS Co Kirusa Gets $10 Million In Funding From Helion Ventures And Nexus India Capital

We were working on this one: Voice SMS company Kirusa has received $10 million in Series C Financing from Helion Venture Partners and Nexus India Capital. Kirusa has a US patent for its Voice SMS, and has established operator relationships with Tata Teleservices, Idea Cellular, BPL Mobile and MTNL in India, and Warid Telecom in Bangladesh, Ufone and Warid Telecom in Pakistan, among others. Ashish Gupta, MD at Helion Vetures and Naren Gupta, MD at Nexus India Capital have joined the board of Kirusa. More in the release here.
I think voice SMS might be useful for a rural expansion, and could take the place of text for local languages — but technology apart, from a users perspective, it just seems like glorified voice mail. Not many use voice mail in India anyway – we prefer missed call signals. So that’s why the money for a global expansion — there isn’t yet a market for this in India.
