Skype Friends MySpace IM

myspaceim-with-skype-client.jpgSkype and MySpace have teamed up to make their instant messaging clients interoperate. This is part of a wide-ranging agreement between the two companies, the financial terms of which were not disclosed, and marks the first time Skype is interoperating with any outside IM clients.

Sometime in November, MySpace will release MySpaceIM with Skype. The partnership will also enable users to link their MySpace profiles and photos or avatars to their accounts on Skype.

The new product will be available in 20 countries where MySpace has localized communities. The new client could be used for free Skype calls to other MySpace or Skype users. In addition, the new offering will have SkypeOut, SkypeIn, voicemail and call-forwarding features.

The new client will give a big boost to both communities and is a net positive for both Skype and MySpace. I will try to dig up what kind of revenue-split arrangement has been struck between the two companies. More specifics of the announcement later as well.
