Wasserman Lays Off 41 Percent Of Sportnet Staff To ‘Rationalize’ Business; Cuts At Media Group, Too

imageThe combo of expansion and tough economy is catching up with Casey Wasserman, whose Wasserman Media Group slashed its Sportnet division by 41 percent. Twenty-eight of the group’s 68 employees were laid off late Friday, including Gabe Huerta, VP-product development, and a number of others from product development and support. Sportnet produces immersive sports coverage, including live events, and operates more than three dozen sites including USAswimming.org, motocross.com, skateboard.com and snowboarder.com. At the same time, LA-based WMG laid off around 10 employees on the administrative side. The total left, according to a source: just under 200 internationally, including Sportnet. The company’s statement: “WMG has restructured the Sportnet group in an effort to rationalize the business in the current economic climate. The company will continue to evaluate the business against the global economic environment we operate in.”
Tom Fox leaving: Sports marketer Tom Fox is leaving in what has been described to me as an unrelated move but is hard to separate. He joined WMG as a principal in 2007 after stints at Gatorade, Nike and the NBA. SBD: “He was hired to run consulting and develop new business areas for WMG, but after WMG bought Gary Stevenson’s Onsport consultancy later in ’07, the role of Fox became less defined. Sources said Fox leaves WMG on good terms and with no definite plans for his next career move.”
