Weekend Vid Picks: Martin Luther King, Jr. Remembered

Doing a Martin Luther King Jr. vid picks on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day — not to mention the day before America inaugurates its first black president — is somewhat obvious as choice of topics go. But don’t worry, because while of course I’m going to link to his iconic I Have A Dream speech….

… I promise that the rest of these clips are a little more original. Starting here, with this mash-up of the I Have A Dream speech with U2’s Pride (In the Name of Love), which was written in tribute to MLK. If you can handle Bono’s slightly overwrought vocals, it’s is a pretty moving combination of clips, photos, and song.

Also if you didn’t get a chance to see him at NewTeeVee Live, then you might not know about how Jay Smooth is one of the smartest voices currently commentating on hip-hop culture. His MLK tribute from last year is a celebration of the preacher’s lesser-known ideals and and thoughts.

And from the larger YouTube community comes this “community tribute,” curated by user Battim. While I’m not exactly sure that the best tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. is vloggers performing an a capella version of the Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams, the purity of the intent, and the diversity of the faces featured, is touching.

To end it, here’s a clip from Dr. King’s last speech, given a day before his assassination.

As holidays go, I dig Martin Luther King Jr. Day quite a bit. Because every year we drag out the same clips of the man speaking — which means every year is an exciting reminder of how great oratory can change the world, in some small way.
