Nokia’s new head of mobile is making headlines today by predicting that the guys from Finland “will be at par” with Apple and Research In Motion by 2011 in the smartphone space. I suppose that could happen, given Nokia’s strong presence in emerging markets, but if the company is to remain a player in the long-term it will have to find a way to reverse its dwindling market share in the U.S. and Western Europe. And there simply aren’t many reasons to believe that’s going to happen anytime soon.
