Omidyar Picks Former ‘Rocky’ Publisher Temple To Lead Local News Site

eBay (NSDQ: EBAY) founder Pierre Omidyar has made a high-profile hire for the local news service he is launching in Hawaii. Omidyar has hired former Rocky Mountain News editor and publisher John Temple as editor. Temple has been an outspoken commenter on the newspaper industry’s woes since the Rocky Mountain News shut down last February — although he’s also owned up to some of the problems that fueled that paper’s demise.

Omidyar’s site — which is still unnamed — will cover public affairs and civic matters across Hawaii. A launch is set for “early Q2” of this year.

— In other local news startup moves, the Bay Area News Project has confirmed that New West Publisher Jonathan Weber is joining the company as editor-in-chief and that former McKinsey & Co. partner Lisa Frazier is signing on as CEO. We had reported earlier this week that those moves were imminent. The Project also confirms that it will supply news for the new Bay Area section of the NYT. In a blog post, Weber said New West has hired a new publisher: Lynn Ingham, a Montana native who is moving back after working in the Bay Area in online sales and marketing.
