Updated with accurate pricing: Apple’s iPad debuted today to decidedly mixed reviews. CrunchGear invited “naysayers” to “feel free to eat their hats,” while Cult of Mac readers dismissed the gadget as “nothing special.” Investors were unimpressed, too, sending Apple shares down 5 percent after the new toy was unveiled. I’m not entirely sold on its appeal: $500 seems fairly reasonable for a Wi-Fi-enabled tablet, but $700 (for the 64 GB version) seems a bit steep. And asking users to pay $630 or more plus data charges for a 3G-enabled tablet also is a tough sell. Apple may be right that there’s a big market for gadgets that bridge the gap between phones and PCs, but that market will be tough to crack at those prices.
