You’ve likely heard about the SpringSource/VMware acquisition of data-fabric vendor GemStone Systems this afternoon, so I figure I’ll spare the scalable data layer talk and get to the juicy stuff. SpringSource division GM Rod Johnson told me today that GemStone likely will be offered as a service (or as native capabilities) in futureVMware-based PaaS offerings, and that although he can’t speak for VMware and Salesforce.com, it should present a valuable option for VMforce, as well. So, what’s more interesting — the possibility of harnessing GemStone’s capabilities in the cloud, or the suggestion that VMware’s PaaS ambitions do, indeed, span beyond VMforce?
