Dish Network’s Subs, Revs Rise; Profits Fall Less Than Expected

The economy may be getting better, but consumers’ interest in home entertainment is continuing to rise, as Dish Network (NSDQ: DISH) said it added 237,000 net new subs in Q1. That’s a reversal of last year, when Dish lost subs. It’s uncertain whether it will continue its momentum — this is the fourth consecutive quarter in which it added subs — as Cablevision’s sub gains appear to be slowing, while both Comcast (NSDQ: CMCSA) and Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) lost subscribers. Meanwhile, the AP noted that Dish’s closest and larger rival, DirecTV (NYSE: DTV), added just 100,000 subs in Q1, down from 460,000 additions last year.
