Glee Launches New Video Player for Superfans

We’re big fans of Glee here at NewTeeVee, especially the way that the show has used smart marketing and social networks like Twitter and MySpace, and the way that it has become a social phenomenon that transcends the typical TV viewership model. And Glee fans are dialed in — making it the most-Tweeted show of 2009, even beating out industry heavyweight American Idol. Now Fox (s NWS) is taking its support that social aspect of Glee promotion even further with a new video player designed to make it even easier for fans to share with others on social networks.

The new Glee Superfan player incorporates a number of new capabilities and social features that aren’t included in the normal Fox video player. The player, available at, includes links to iTunes, allowing viewers to purchase songs that are performed during the show, check out character bio pages, connect to a viewer’s Facebook and Twitter profiles and view a live stream of what Twitter members are saying about the show.

The player, powered by, allows Gleeks to drill down to find additional content, all while watching the show through a picture-in-picture screen. Different elements appear in the player controls at different times, based on what is happening on-screen during the show. One other killer feature is being able to jump in and out of a video and return to the place where you left off instead of having to search for the place where you stopped watching the video.

A Fox spokesperson said by email that the broadcaster will be tweaking the UI a bit as it goes along and sees how users interact with the player. But for now the Superfan player seems a good way for Fox to connect viewers to their favorite characters, as well as other fans of the show.
