Ok! Mag’s Location-Sharing Foray: A Celeb Stalking App

Amid all the hype about Foursquare, Gowalla and other mobile location sharing services, one company is trying a niche take…

Celebrity lifestyle magazine Ok! is launching CelebSpotter, a £1.79 iPhone app that encourages users to supply not their location but the locations of celebrities.

From any given location, CelebSpotter will show you the nearby bars that fellow users say pop stars and actors frequent. And, if you have a particular penchant for just one famous person, you can stay updated with the locations s/he has been checking in at.

Developer Jeanie Media intends it as a new spin that mashes together local entertainment business listings with social location sharing, saying CelebSpotter will help users “live the lifestyle of their favourite celebrities and gain access to a wealth of listings, reviews and recommendations from those who know how to help them make the most of their social lives”.

To that end, it says the app is underpinned by content and data from 20 partners, including FENS Celebrity Bulletin, the Press Association, Rough Guides, VisitBritain and, er, the British Toilet Association.

You can see why the businesses listed would want to be associated as celebrity hang-outs.

But there’s one potentially freaky aspect – it’s the ideal tool for the more disturbed amongst us to stalk famous folk.
