Today in Cloud

In case you haven’t been keeping up with Cisco, it’s getting the pieces in order to become a very big player in cloud computing. Today, the news is its pricey and progressive FabricPath VM-migration solution, but it’s just the latest piece. At the foundation are its UCS servers and VBlock appliances, as well as its Nexus switches. Of course, there’s also its Overlay Transport Virtualization technology, high-bandwidth routers, and global collection of data centers serving SaaS and collaboration tools. In the past week, it also added Lew Tucker as cloud CTO, and it already has VMware co-founder Ed Bugnion as virtualization CTO. Cisco has most of the pieces to be a flagship systems vendor for the cloud, but maybe a big software acquisition or an expansion of Acadia‘s scope is in order to tie everything together.
