What’s bigger news: EMC shutting down its Atmos Online service, or Eucalyptus getting another $20 million in funding? Honestly, I’m not sure. Eucalyptus’s new money is a big deal because it means the company, which has a lot of mindshare but not a lot of paying customers, can continue honing its product to make it appealing enough to open pocketbooks. However, the EMC news reveals a few possible truths about what it means to actually offer a cloud service. If you’re not a veteran service provider, perhaps it’s more difficult than it appears, or perhaps it’s just less profitable. Of course, it also could mean that Cisco has been right all the long about not cannibalizing revenue from your service provider customers.
