Today in Social

I’m as guilty as anyone in obsessively covering Facebook’s location services, Places, today. (See today’s Curated Links.) One thing about the coverage is bugging me, though, and that’s the use of the term “partners.” Facebook shared the stage at its event with a handful of platform competitors (Foursquare, Gowalla) and potential applications competitors (Yelp, Booyah). Does this sound like Foursquare’s a “partner?” Exposing APIs and web services does not a partnership make. Consider these conditions: a) product must ship, b) money must change hands, c) deal must be exclusive. Achieve two of those three, and I’d call it a partnership.
