Today in Social

Morgan Stanley’s Internet queen bee Mary Meeker presented her usual overview at the Web 2.0 conference. As always, it’s worth plowing through for the data points aggregated into a coherent near-term worldview. She points out that mobile is the fastest-ramping new new thing ever, and that three social ecosystems matter: those powered by Facebook, Apple, and Google (Google? social?). She summarizes new commerce trends that integrate social, local, instant gratification, and gaming. She also trots out the same old stats illustrating the disconnect between time spent online and dollars spent on online advertising, in comparison with traditional media. Realistically, tons of online time is spent in communications and social media – activities that are not conducive to traditional intrusive advertising. The industry’s going to have to innovate¬† more to figure out how best to exploit those new media without driving users nuts.
