Today in Cloud

There was an interesting juxtaposition in the news today, with Oracle reporting huge quarterly growth and Oracle wannabe Splunk talking about a potential IPO. When I spoke with Splunk earlier in the week, CEO Godfrey Sullivan told me he thinks the product can become as important as the relational database, which, of course, is where Oracle derives a great portion of its revenue. It’s not just a pipe dream — with what we now know about the importance of operational data and all data, in general, products like Splunk could become the analogous to relational databases for machine-generated data. Taken as a whole, though, there is one certainty from these two items: data is fast becoming the most-valuable asset in IT.
