Mobile App Platform Startup Kony Raises $19.1 Million

Concerned about fragmentation in the mobile world? Given the growth of so many different platforms, that may be a difficult tide to stem. Instead, a lot of companies are proposing to ride the wave, and they are starting to grab the attention of investors. One of them, Kony Solutions — which provides a mobile app platform for developers to “write once, run everywhere” — has raised $19.1 million in a Series A round of funding from Insight Venture Partners.

Today’s investment comes on top of $13.4 million Kony has received in seed funding, according a news release from the company.

Kony says that it currently has over 35 Fortune 500 brands using its product to develop, design and deploy their apps across different platforms. They include United Airlines and Toyota.

Kony says its platform covers some 8,500 devices, including smartphones and tablets running all of the major operating systems. Devices and platforms include iPad, iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Symbian, J2ME, Windows Phone 7 and Palm (NSDQ: PALM) devices. Kony’s platform also supports device-optimized mobile websites for more than 15 browsers, including Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) Safari, Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Chrome and Firefox, and HTML5 as well as WAP.

Kony says the funding will be used for R&D and to expand sales and marketing.
