News Corp. Still Mum On New Sunday Paper, To Put Fabulous Mag Into The Sun

While some of those working on News of the World may have been able to slide in a few barbs against their employer in the final edition of the paper, others appear to be laying the groundwork for what will come next.

Owner News International, a part of News Corp (NSDQ: NWS). has not yet announced concrete plans to publish another tabloid in the UK to replace the disgraced and now-defunct News of the World, but paidContent has learned that the newspaper’s magazine supplement Fabulous will be running in the Saturday edition of NOTW’s sister paper, The Sun, for the time being.

The news that Fabulous would not be disappearing was first revealed earlier today by Rachael Richardson, the editor of the supplement, who has been giving a nostalgic and positive blow-by-blow of the final days and hours of the newspaper via her Twitter account. (She also happens to be the digital editor who oversaw the paywall go up — and, this week, down — on the website.)

“So many tweets saying today is last issue of @Fabulousmag,” she wrote. “Thankfully it is not! Fabulous magazine continues! More info soon peeps x”

paidContent understands from another source that for the time being its home will be in the Saturday edition of The Sun.

Late last week News International turned up as the owner of two domain names, and (but not the .com domains) that some have linked to possible plans to launch a new Sunday tabloid, extending its other best-selling tabloid title, The Sun.

Whether that actually becomes the name of a new Sunday paper, it is unsurprising to see the publisher keeping alive some of the key (and unsullied) brands from the tabloid, which could slot into a new newspaper if it turns up.

The news comes on the same day that Rupert Murdoch has arrived in the UK, and it emerged that emails that appear to confirm that payments were made to police for information, and that there was phone hacking taking place on a wide scale.

While some 200 journalists were made redundant when News of the World closed, not all of them have been as nostalgic and positive about the newspaper as Richardson has been in her tweets. One person, calling herself ExNOTWJourno, claimed she and colleagues were preparing a tell-all blog exposing practices at the company. That has yet to be made public, however.
