Today in Mobile

In the wake of yesterday’s shocking news that Hewlett Packard will stop producing smartphones and tablets running WebOS, the question now is what will become of the mobile operating system. InformationWeek has already posted an obituary for the platform, while This is My Next reports that HP is “not walking away” from WebOS and will likely license it to other manufacturers. I fear that the window has closed for WebOS, though, and I think it’s highly unlikely any other company will invest the money that would be necessary to make it a success. Like my former colleague Mike Dano notes over at Fierce Wireless, selling WebOS is “the toughest job in the mobile industry.”
