AMD’s chip is officially the world’s fastest

AMD (s AMD) says it has set a new record for the “highest frequency of a computer processor” by overclocking its 8-core AMD FX desktop processor. The processor achieved a top speed of 8.429 gigahertz on Aug. 31. The previous record was 8.308 GHz. The AMD FX CPU, likely to be launched in the fourth quarter of 2011, is based on AMD’s new Bulldozer architecture.
