Today marks Day 3 of Research In Motion’s BlackBerry outage, a nightmare that began across the Atlantic but has now reached both North American and South American shores. RIM said that the failure can be traced to a piece of equipment that connects its internet network to the Internet at large, but that hasn’t assuaged the ire of customers complaining about a lack of communication. Regardless of the reason, though, it’s tough to imagine a worse time for this: RIM’s market share has been eroding for months, the new iPhone is drawing rave reviews, and Android’s momentum continues to grow. RIM is known for its reliable, secure messaging — that’s about the only thing it’s known for anymore — so this is a dramatic failure of what should be the company’s only real differentiator.
