I’m traveling this week so updates may be a bit patchy. Today’s news regarding Amazon’s plans to publish 122 books this fall directly to the Kindle is worth pausing to take not of. It’s a stark reminder to publishers that they risk going the way of record labels: custodians of large libraries of existing copyrights, but no longer as essential to the process of bringing the work of authors to readers as in the past. Given the thousands of titles published every year, 122 from Amazon is not a huge number. But it’s definitely a sign of the coming times.
