Meredith is going to acquire Allrecipes from Reader’s Digest for $175 million. Allrecipes is a pretty big, advertiser-friendly site, though it seems to have been only a $25 million money-losing business for Reader’s Digest. But I always held it up as a good example of user-generated content with light professional curation. Meredith recently acquired Every Day with Rachael Ray from Reader’s Digest, and FamilyFun from Disney, and is building up a solid portfolio of digital assets to complement its women’s magazines (Better Homes and Gardens, Family Circle, Parents, etc.). It’s been as aggressive as anyone on the tablet front.
