Yesterday’s release of Toyota’s all EV RAV4 sports utility cross over was less about Toyota than about Tesla. Toyota is releasing the car to meet California pollution rules and with just 2,600 cars slated for production over 3 years, this is truly just a model run (not to mention the hefty $49,800 price tag, before a $7,500 federal tax credit and a $2,500 California rebate). Toyota has a $50 million investment in Tesla and Tesla is producing the lithium-ion battery pack along with the electric motor that powers the front wheels for the RAV4.  If Tesla can cement itself as the supplier of choice for the EV production line, it’ll have another strong revenue source aside from its high end luxury models.
