It’s hard to fathom the scale of a power outage affecting 620 million customers, twice the American population. The outage trapped miners underground, shut down the Delhi metro system, and halted crematoria which left bodies half burnt. And with this crisis comes a huge opportunity ranging from clean power generation to smart metering to microgrids. An op-ed in The Asian Age pointed out that while there’s blame going toward Indian states for overdrawing power on the grid, the real issues surround power companies having to sell electricity below cost at fixed prices, aging infrastructure, and the absence of enough new power generation projects, particularly in renewable energy. If there were ever a wake up call, even in a country which is much better acquainted with discomforts like power outages, 620 million people without power is such a call.
