James Hansen, the climate scientist who heads NASA’s Goddard Institute, has come out swinging and is now saying that individual weather events are being caused by global warming. Typically scientists have always issued the caveat that no individual weather event is caused by global warming. He noted to the Associated Press, “We can say this is caused by global warming. The gases are having the expected effects. We know that the consequences are going to be disastrous for young people.” It’s been another year of extreme weather, and Hansen’s most recent research compares the current period with the time from 1951-1980, showing that the probability of an extreme temperature spike now is much higher. Essentially, the chance of having a rare weather event is increasing, and Hansen believes that research supports the fact that the cause is GHG emissions. You can read Hansen, in his own words, in The Washington Post.
