B&N releases Nook app for Windows 8

Amazon’s (s AMZN) Kindle app for Windows (s MSFT) 8 was in the Microsoft App Store on October 25, the same day Windows 8 debuted. Barnes & Noble(s bks), which recently finalized its agreement with¬†Microsoft to spin-off its Nook and college businesses, took a little longer, but on Wednesday the company released a Nook app for Windows 8.

The Nook for Windows 8 app incorporates one of the reader-centric features that Barnes & Noble also included in its two new Nook HD tablets: Nook Channels offers¬†curated book recommendations designed to drive discovery and purchases. Other tablet features — like a “rip out the page” function for magazines and catalogs — aren’t available through the Windows 8 app.

Microsoft invested $300 million in Barnes & Noble in a strategic partnership announced in April and finalized last month. The partnership spins Barnes & Noble’s Nook and college businesses into a new company called Nook Media. Microsoft holds a 17.6 percent stake in Nook Media, with Barnes & Noble owning the remaining shares.
