Amazon’s cloud keeps on growing

Amazon (s AMZN) Web Services continued its growth — at least according to what can be gleaned from Amazon’s second quarter earnings.
For the period ending June 30, the “other” North America category, where AWS resides along with some other businesses, hit $844 million — up  63 percent (!) from $515 million a year ago, and up from $750 million from the first quarter.

Here are the year-ago numbers:

Numbers like these are why many see AWS as the de facto standard in the public cloud. A new Gartner Magic Quadrant survey purportedly shows AWS far ahead of vendors like IBM(s ibm), HP(s hpq) and Rackspace(s rax), all of which dearly want to carve out a bigger piece of the public cloud business.
Of course if you want to start a lively debate, just ask a couple of the clouderati how profitable AWS is, and step back.
