Good afternoon. My name is Marc Chenn, and I’m the CTO and cofounder of Salt Stack. It’s good to be with you today. We live in a world where two and a half billion people use the internet. You and I know that all of this cloud and web scale isn’t just something that happens by magic. Behind the internet of everything are servers, data centers, and software that make it all work. Web consumers today expect the modern infrastructure to simply deliver an always on internet experience in massive scale. There are hundreds of millions of servers in the world today. Let’s assume that with no automation, one SYSAdmin can realistically manage approximately 50 servers, assuming a 60-hour work week, and unlimited supplies of those five-hour energy shots. At scale, this becomes a problem, and the internet, or your cloud at worse, are at risk.

Servers need to be deployed and virtualized, and application stacks provisioned and configured to support complex production environments at scale. This complexity becomes a breeding ground for murphy’s law. It’s inevitable that things will break, and when things break, especially your infrastructure, servers need to be redeployed and reconfigured over and over again. Data centers are like the sausage factories of our day, and we have this new age industrial revolution on our hands. Unfortunately, legacy systems and infrastructure management tools that were supposed to help typically have made the problems worse Salt Stack exists to help make the cloud assembly line fast and effective, and our customers are deploying legions of software-based minions to do all the internet factory jobs that nobody wants to do by hand anymore.

Tom Hatch, my cofounder, was an assembly like worker, building the internet one cloud at a time. He was fed up with legacy systems and, infrastructure management tools that were too slow, too difficult to use, and that didn’t automate to web scale. He wrote Salt in his basement in February of 2011. He wrote it in Python, as an extremely fast and remote execution engine. In just two short years, Salt has exploded in popularity. Fundamentally, Salt was built to manage the complexity of physical or virtual servers, and to handle the scale of public or private clouds. At the end of 2012, Salt Stack was named by the GitHub Octiverse List as a top ten cloud startup, and for reference, we were listed as number eight, and Open Stack Nova was number seven, just for perspective.

A little under two years ago, after two successful commercial software exits and a stint on Wall Street, I was asked to join Tom as the Salt Stack CEO and cofounder. Together we create a unique blend of open and commercial software expertise. Today, Salt Stack is being used by massive application development organizations and thousands of DevOps pros from around the world to essentially build and maintain a better internet. Early adopters included companies like LinkedIn, Hulu, Wiki Media, and many hundreds of others, early adopters and first movers in the market.

Before I wrap up, I just want to conclude by sharing three reason why Salt Stack will continue to build out its developer community and its commercial offerings into the market. First, Salt Stack is fundamentally 100% open. We’re not open core, similar to many of our predecessors in the market, because we have seen how that model tends to alienate developer communities and impede innovation. Second, Salt Stack is fundamentally agnostic in the platform. Regardless of the server, the infrastructure, the OS or the hyper visor, Salt Stack is fundamentally agnostic and is built to manage and provide capabilities for the modern infrastructure. Finally, I’m pleased to re-announce here at GigaOM, just like I did in San Francisco, that the Salt Stack Enterprise offering is now commercially available and is being sold on a per node subscription basis to our users.

Wrapping up, Salt Stack is modern automation for the cloud assembly line. Our user base is growing massively, our consumers are extremely happy with the offering that we’ve provided for them. Today I’d like to extend a challenge to all of you who may not be familiar with Salt Stack to go out and download the software and to find out for yourselves why speed, scale, and flexibility continue to come back as the pillars and the reasons why folks are choosing to use Salt Stack over any other configuration management, infrastructure management tool in the market today.
