The great internet of things companies will shine at software and hardware

Apple isn’t successful because it’s a software or a hardware company. It’s successful because it’s a master at combining the two, and, according to Seamless Toy Company CEO Michael Rosenblatt, internet of things companies should pay close attention.

“The companies that survive this transition, that really shine through this internet of things revolution are the ones that are going to figure out how to do hardware really well and software really well,” Rosenblatt said during a panel discussion at the GigaOM Mobilize conference. “It’s not going to be sufficient to be an expert in one or the other. I think that that’s the big categorical business model shift that will happen.”

Electric Imp Hugo Fiennes and Rosenblatt agreed that businesses also need to pay attention to how hobbyists and makers are making use of new Internet of Things tools.

“We think the really big applications might not be invented by big companies,” Fiennes said. Instead, it could be a hobbyist working in her basement.

Luckily, they said, companies have been supportive from the start in providing businesses and individuals alike access to connectivity tools.

“The startups and the big players are recognizing the value of the grassroots innovators,” Rosenblatt said.
