Counting cores: Nvidia demos PC graphics for mobiles with 192 core Tegra K1

To show how it’s bringing the graphical power of desktops to mobiles, Nvidia(s nvda) debuted its 192 core Tegra K1 chip at the Consumer Electronics Show on Sunday. The new chip will be available to hardware makers in two versions and the company expects to see it in laptops, tablets and even automobiles.

During a demonstration, Nvidia showed the new Tegra K1 running Unreal Engine 4; a graphics environment typically reserved for desktop-class devices that supports DirectX 11 and Open GL 4.4. Here’s a peek at the graphics demonstration along with additional information on the chip’s capabilities:


If the chip performs in the real world as good as the demo, it could bring less of a gap between games on PCs and mobile devices.¬†Device makers can choose a 32-bit quad-core version of the new Tegra K1 that uses a GHz¬†4-Plus-1 ARM Cortex-A15 CPU setup at up to 2.3 GHz or a custom, Nvidia-designed 64-bit dual-core version, codenamed “Project Denver” running up to 2.5 GHz.

Although no company has yet announced it will be using the new Tegra chips, I’d love to see what a tablet-maker could do with such silicon. Gaming on mobiles has been steadily improving but we really haven’t seen many “PC game” experiences on a slate. And I suspect the Tegra K1 support for Unreal Engine 4 would make it a bit easier for game developers to port over a computer gaming title with minimal effort.
