Before the Super Bowl, make your TV look better with the THX tune up Android app

There’s still time to calibrate your television before Super Bowl XLVIII, provided you know what you’re doing. THX wants to help: It released the THX tune-up app for Android(s goog) in Google Play on Monday, following an iOS(s aapl) version from last year. The app is free from now until the day after the Super Bowl; after that you’ll pay $1.99 for THX’s expertise.

I’ve used the iOS version of the software and in the past and found it incredibly useful. The app actually works in conjunction with your television set, meaning you actually connect your smartphone or tablet to the TV for calibration. THX calls it a “two screen app”. In the case of iOS, I used AirPlay mirroring. For the Android edition, you’ll need an HDMI connector to pair up your Android devices and big screen.

Once connected, the app walks through various picture and sound settings including brightness, contrast, tint, color, aspect ratio, speaker assignment and speaker phase. All of the adjustments are complemented with simple instructions and explanations of the settings.

For now, the THX tune-up app for Android only works with certain Android 4.2.2 and up devices: HTC’s One series, the Google Nexus devices and Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and Note 3. If you have one of these, I can definitely recommend the app; especially while it’s free. For those without a compatible device, you can get a similar calibration experience from various DVD and Blu-Ray movie discs that are THX certified; I’ve found the same THX tune up functions on Pixar(s dis) movie disks, for example.
