Facebook reportedly in talks to acquire drone-making company Titan Aerospace

Facebook (s fb) just poured $16 billion into acquiring messaging company WhatsApp, and now it seems that the company is considering adding one more company under its umbrella.  TechCrunch reports that Facebook is currently in talks to acquire Titan Aerospace, which specializes in drone technology, for roughly $60 million.

According to TechCrunch’s sources, Facebook is interested in using the drones to carry internet access as part of its Internet.org initiative — an alternative to the moonshot project Google(s goog) Loon. The initiative would reportedly start in Africa, where the drones would act as “atmospheric satellites” that could provide internet access and stay in the air for five years without needing to land or refuel.

The deal is reportedly in the early stages. A relatively inexpensive drone manufacturing system could be the ticket to supercharging Internet.org’s mission, providing the hardware necessary to establish communications (say, through WhatsApp) in areas that lack connectivity.
