GSA launches 18F, its internal startup to clean up government IT, this time for real

After a bit of a sneak preview last week, the General Services Administration launched on Wednesday 18F, an internal startup effort based on the principles of agile development, to improve and streamline federal government IT.

The effort is staffed by presidential innovation fellows with an eye on avoiding more snafus along the lines of the web site website.

According to the announcement, 18F will partner with agencies to deliver “high-quality digital services using agile methodologies of the top technology startups; quickly deploy prototypes; and encourage digital tools and services to be reused throughout the government.”

This is part and parcel of the Obama administration’s attempt to make public access to information easier while also cutting the cost and waste in government IT. The effort was named 18F because it was born near 18th Street and F Street.
