Ericsson solidifies OpenStack commitment with big assist from Mirantis

On Thursday, Mirantis confirmed plans to supply “carrier-grade” OpenStack software to telcom network giant Ericsson. This is part of a five-year plan to embed the open-source cloud software  in Ericsson’s(s eric) telecom networks, data centers and cloud services, according to a Mirantis statement.
There is no mention of the dollar amount of the deal, but sources confirmed the $30 million figure reported by The Wall Street Journal (registration required) last week. And that is indeed a big deal for Mirantis– which has $20 million in funding — Ericsson participated in a $10 million round in June. And it’s a big deal for the OpenStack cloud effort which is chugging along Thursday with the latest “icehouse” release.
Mirantis CEO Adrian Ionel — who would not talk dollar figures — said that embedding OpenStack at the core of Ericsson’s next-generation mobile infrastructure means that mobile operators will be able to push out new, innovative services much faster than before and use commodity (cheaper) hardware to do so.
It’ s not surprising that Ericsson is a fan of OpenStack. There’s that Mirantis investment, for one thing but in addition, the giant Swedish company signed on as a gold member of the OpenStack Foundation a year ago.
The news also shows how Mirantis has evolved. The Mountain View, Calif.-based company started out as an OpenStack-focused systems integrator, weaving together OpenStack components from different vendors in a series of custom deployments for customers including PayPal(s ebay), The Gap, Cisco(s cisco) and others. Then, in October, it decided to take all that experience and roll out an OpenStack distribution of its own.
It’s also interesting that Jason Hoffman, who is now product line head for Ericsson’s cloud systems and platforms, was quoted in the release, since Hoffman, in his previous life as CTO of Joyent, was no huge fan of OpenStack. But hey, things change.
If you want to hear more about how one Mirantis customer implemented its cloud, the Gap’s senior director of infrastructure architecture Jeffery Padgett, will speak at Structure in June .
