This week, Bill Fathers, SVP and GM of VMware’s cloud effort, talks about where vCloud Hybrid Services fits into increasingly crowded enterprise cloud market and why the corporate cloud decision really isn’t (or shouldn’t be) all about price. And on how VMware’s federation of data center and service provider partners will help it scale up even compared to the biggest of the big cloud providers.

Fathers will be on stage to discuss this more in a few weeks at Structure.

Server virtualization — VMware’s power base — is all about cramming as many applications on one piece of hardware as possible. Mesosphere is attacking a different model — a world in which applications — Hadoop etc. — are already distributed across lots of nodes. The goal in this world is to turn those resources into a pool and to manage them intelligently.

Our second guest, Mesosphere CEO Florian Leibert, discusses why big companies should check out the open-source Mesos resource management tool which makes it easier to manage those pools, launch apps in a hurry, and as Derrick Harris pointed out “ignore dead servers for weeks at a time, if they choose.”

But first, we talk about the progress Microsoft Azure has made in the infrastructure as a service market, at least according to Gartner’s latest research, which shows Microsoft a solid — albeit distant — number two to Amazon Web Services. And we’ll get Microsoft EVP Scott Guthrie to discuss that at Structure as well.  So get comfy and give it a listen!
