Germany’s public broadcaster ARD is getting ready to build a Netflix (S NFLX) competitor, again: ARD revealed in a recent fiscal filing that it is talking to producers and others about building an online video portal, according to a report from Germany’s Funk Korrespondenz (hat tip to Broadband TV News).
The news comes ahead of Netflix’s launch in Germany in September, but ARD had been working for some time to prepare itself for a launch of the U.S. video service. Originally, the broadcaster intended to launch a video portal dubbed Germany’s Gold in cooperation with fellow public broadcaster ZDF, but regulators shut down these efforts last summer due to fears of market dominance. It looks like ARD now wants to address these concerns by building its new platform without any involvement from ZDF.
ARD isn’t the only broadcaster that’s apparently spooked by Netflix’s impending European expansion. Last month, Austria’s ORF bought a stake in the local online video service Filmmit with the goal of using it to build out a Netflix-like subscription platform.
