New U.S. Digital Service launched to keep disaster from repeating itself

When you hear the words  “,” chances are you think of a web site that failed in the most public way possible. And that proved a huge embarrassment to an administration that prided itself on competence and efficiency.

So meet the Obama administration’s new U.S. Digital Service, which launched on Monday and is headed up by Mikey Dickerson, a former Google site reliability manager and Obama for America hand who helped design a realtime election day monitoring tool.

The goal is to take lessons learned from fixing, basically forming best practices from them to make sure upcoming projects work smoothly.

To me, it sure sounds like there’s some overlap between this group, which falls under the purview of the Executive Branch’s Office of Management and Budget and 18F which is part of the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA).

But, U.S. CIO Steven VanRoekel told the Washington Post that 18F is more about fixing things that are broken — “parachuting in” — while USDS will consult and provide guidance for projects in process.
