Big Switch co-founder Guido Appenzeller joins VMware

Big Switch co-founder Guido Appenzeller, who in June Gigaom reported had left the software-defined networking startup, has joined VMware. Appenzeller is also no longer listed as a board member on the Big Switch website.

Appenzeller’s first day on the job will be this coming Monday and his official title is chief technology strategy officer of VMware’s network and security business unit, according to a VMware spokesperson.

Last year, Appenzeller transitioned to a CTO position from his original CEO role at Big Switch. His new position at VMware is noteworthy given that Big Switch and its Open-Flow controller for SDN seemed poised to take on both Cisco and VMware.

This makes another recent big hire for VMware. In September, the virtualization giant brought on Cisco’s vice president of systems engineering Dominick Delfino to become its vice president of worldwide systems engineering. According to a CRN report, Cisco was supposedly “livid” over the move.
