Samsung lands a hit with Milk Music… in Korea

A week after launching is Milk Music service in South Korea, Samsung seems to have a hit on its hands: The Milk Music app, which only works with Samsung handsets, became the number one free app on Google Play in the country this week, according to a report from Korea Joongang Daily. Too bad the music labels don’t seem to like it.

[company]Samsung[/company] unveiled a localized version of Milk Music in conjunction with the Galaxy Note 4 launch in South Korea last week. Milk Music offers users a [company]Pandora[/company]-like personalized radio experience with in interesting interface that mixes an old-school radio dial with artist and genre stations. The company first unveiled the service in the U.S. in March.

The Milk app, which isn’t being bundled with any handsets, has been downloaded between one and five million times in the U.S., and between 500,000 and 1 million times in South Korea, according to Google Play statistics.

Samsung’s strategy seems to be to offer Milk as a value-add for Samsung customers, as Milk isn’t currently featuring any ads for the time being. U.S. subscribers are offered a premium subscription tier, priced at $4 a month, that gives them access to unlimited skips and offline playback, amongst other things.

However, giving music away for free doesn’t bode well with everyone. The Korea Joongang Daily notes that a local music rights group is threatening to cancel its contracts with Samsung the company doesn’t start charging for access.
