Washington Post launches news app just for Amazon Fire owners

The Washington Post, which is owned by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos as of last August, rolled out a new “immersive news-reading” app Thursday — and it is only available to Amazon Fire owners for now. They will get free access to the app for six months. After that, it will be $1 for the next six months.

The app will be available on other devices next year, but those users will pay more: The app will cost $3.99 per month on other devices, according to the New York Times.

The Washington Post already has apps for a variety of tablets, but this edition has a few different features. Among them:

  • Pinch View — a new way to browse: Readers can easily swipe through an edition as if they are flipping through the pages of a magazine, getting a bird’s eye view of the entire content offering, along with the ability to simultaneously read the stories.”
  • “Packaged for the Tablet Reader: Created specifically for tablet readers’ sensibility, the app has two distinct editions released at 5:00am and 5:00pm ET, with breaking news and other updates added in between.”

The app was designed as part of an initiative called “Project Rainbow,” Businessweek reported in October, run by Kerry Lauerman, the former editor-in-chief of Salon.

“With 42 million monthly readers and growing, this is another step forward in our effort to serve an even larger national and global audience,” Fred Ryan, publisher and CEO of the Washington Post, said in a statement. “We are thrilled to be working with [company]Amazon[/company] to offer this first to Fire Tablet customers.” The app gives the Post a chance to find new readers who might not seek out its product otherwise.

Speaking of seeking the app out: It will be included in an automatic over-the-air update to Fire tablets, and according to Amazon’s release “Customers who do not wish to keep the app can simply delete it by pressing and holding on the app icon and selecting Remove.”

An earlier version of this article said that after the first six free months, the app would cost $1 per month for the next six months. It will actually cost $1 total for the next six months.
