Freescale is bringing turbo wireless power with a 15W Qi charger

Amidst the latest news of fast chargers for compatible phones and tablets, Freescale has its own twist on things. And this one is wireless.

On Monday, the company announced what it calls the “industry’s first 15 W Qi-compliant wireless charging solution” as a precursor to the actual product, expected in the first quarter of 2015. For now, Freescale is offering a pair of test boards for companies that might be interested in the technology.

Wireless charging is typically slower than wired power transfer so the speed boost is the big deal here. The company describes the speed capability this way:

Delivering 3x the power of common 5 W charging solutions, Freescale’s 15 W wireless offering provides efficient charging of larger form factor devices with higher capacity batteries, while enabling faster charging of smaller form factor devices by delivering higher power. For example, a typical tablet with a 4000 mAh battery might take over eight hours to charge from a standard USB port, while Freescale’s solution could reduce this charge time dramatically to just a few hours.

What stands out to me is the 15 watts of power this wireless product can reportedly provide. Why? That’s the same output level as the Turbo Charger I just bought for my Moto X 2014 phone; that charger also comes with Google’s Nexus 6 and it works well, adding hours of runtime in as little as a 15 minute plug in.

Of course, both of those phones use Qualcomm’s QuickCharge 2.0 technology, which can handle the power input — about three times that of a USB charger. Once we have products compatible with Freescale’s new 15W wireless charging tech, we’ll have to test the company’s claim that it’s comparable to the wired tech that Qualcomm offers.

If Freescale can deliver on that promise though, devices will potentially get the best of both worlds: The convenience of wireless charging as well as the faster charging speeds to get your battery re-juiced as quickly as possible.
